Day Retreat - Yoga for Cancer

  • St Michael's Resort Stracey Road Falmouth, England, TR11 United Kingdom (map)

A fabulous opportunity for cancer survivors & thrivers to gather together for a day of community, rest & rejuvenation at the beautiful St. Michael’s Resort, Falmouth. Suitable for anyone on a cancer journey, whether you are in active treatment and feel well enough to participate in gentle movement and guided relaxation, or are in recovery from recent or historic treatment.*

The day is facilitated by Lauren, an experienced yoga teacher with the British Wheel of Yoga, with specialist training in working therapeutically with cancer. Lauren is not only an experienced teacher, but is on her own cancer journey. Now six years on from a Bowel Cancer diagnosis, Lauren’s life has been shaped by cancer and impacted by treatment and ongoing surveillance. Yoga has played a significant role in the management of her own physical, mental and emotional recovery from Cancer and this is what she will be sharing on the day.

10:00am - Arrival at St. Michael’s Resort, warm drinks, a chance to meet one another and get settled in for the day.

10:30am -12:00pm - Mindful & Somatic Movement. In this session we will explore gentle joint freeing movement which aims to cultivate curiosity about the physical experiences that arise within us and the compassionate ways in which we can meet arising sensation. Great for managing pain and discomfort, great for finding confidence in range, great for relieving physical tension.

12:00 - 2:00pm - Lunch, a chance to chat and share experiences with each other.

2:00 - 2:30pm - Managing Anxiety around recurrence and death. We will explore mindfulness exercises and breathing practices which aim to break the cycle of mental rumination, and turn the fear of death into the deep appreciation of life.

2:30pm - 3:30pm - Deep Rest: Restorative Yoga & Yoga Nidra, exploring a range of floor based yoga poses in stillness, which are supported by bolsters, blocks and blankets. These poses offer the opportunity to relax and completely switch off. The practice of Yoga Nidra (or yogic sleep) is a guided meditation which systematically moves through the physical, mental and emotional layers of body. It begins with intention setting, which is followed by the rhythmical movement of awareness around the body, explores the inner visual landscape and ends back with intention setting.

3:30pm - 4:00pm - Grounding & Goodbyes: We will take our time to return from Yoga Nidra, and we’ll explore what might have arisen within the practice through discussion & listening. Warm drinks and goodbyes.

*please discuss and ensure you have the sign off from your consultant if you are in treatment or have had recent surgery. Whilst these practices are beneficial on the journey, it’s important to know when complete rest and recovery is required.
